Old demo scene and game footage with focus on PC, some C64/Amiga/Atari. These are real time calculated animations with music
that run on obsolete computer hardware.
While emulators get better and better I still have the opportunity to use real hardware for running these old demo scene programs.
So all videos are captured from actual hardware unless explicitly stated otherwise in the description.
If you are curious which system/hardware was used you may visit my Hardware Gallery at retronn.de
Also be aware that youtube reduces the original frame rate of the source material (mostly 70 Hz for DOS)
such that some animations begin to stutter.
Usually I add links to the original capture in the video descriptions. Get those if you like best quality.
As hobby this is a non-monetarized channel, so if you see ads YT detected something and the claiming corporation gets money.
GUS at port 2x0 ?

The Wanderer Group & The Pentacle intro - Giana Sisters C64
It is amazing what they can do with the limitation of the hardware, I was an user of the FastTracker 2 and I always be amazed what a powerfull software can only be stored in a 1.44mb floppy disk. now I am using the Windows port of Fast Tracker 2 and only take 4mb, and still be a piece of art of software.
Would love to see their source code.
Sweeet! I had the same SoundCard - Loved it, miss it
A long time ago... ^^
❤❤
Thanks for uploading. This is what got me into demo coding back then. My first mekka was 99 and I alwys regretted not having been there 98 when there was a bit more glow from the old days. While watching I started wondering why I was so excited about this demo. Then the credit section started and I realized that this was always the best part of the demo to me because of the music and the emotion it carried.
I wonder what this looks like on the voodoo 1
It was an exciting time for computers when visual effects had an impact on people because, back then, real-time visuals needed a lot of trickery around hardware limitations. In other words, demo coders had challenges breaking the barriers. Fun fact: the start screen here, with the direct comparison of 386 and 486, gave me even more thrills than the demo itself. I owned a 486 DX 2/66 and later upgraded to a 486 DX 3/100. I have fond memories of these two machines and was incredibly proud to have owned a 486 DX/2 when DOOM came out and had a significant edge over my 386 friends. 😁
I was there Gandalf! Was thousend years ago! eheheeh
Armada E500
2:29 wtf crazy frog
29 years later this is still damn impressive, I remember my poor little 486-33 trying its hardest to render this back in 1995!
Lev, you're the fucking man. 15 years later, the riffs still rip.
*Before anti-aliasing was a thing*
Best intro ever…remember installing a generic video card but with 3dfx chip, went from full flat alleyway to mirror finish like in this video, I just felled out of my chair….Good Times
On pcdemos are just cheats
I have got this one in Mission A.D. crack. It could be kind of strange but i still listening it after 34 years.
Loved it back then an still do. Robin Wünderlich aka The Dark Angle was a fantastic cracker on C64 (Dynamic Duo) and on Amiga (Quartex). So sad Hans-Jürgen Grahl aka The Executor had an accident and passed away
happy may 1st to all who still celebrate.
This brings back memories. Used to run this over and over again to admire the awesome soundtrack and to admire what was possible on my PC (I think I ran this on my 486dx4 with a soundblaster pro?). Thanks for sharing
Very classic's picture and bitmap - line also vector object animation in 3D create positive demoscene computer multimedia film. Pleasure music with rythm, view impress is revelation.🎞⌨👏😇😯
Würde echt Mega gerne nochmal ne Demo Party besuchen… meine letzte war glaube ich die WIRED 98
The music is "The Jungle Escape" by ArchAngel
Man, 90s tech demos could get weird
Is it supposed to look corrupted?
This demo takes the current desktop content as texture. I think this is intended.
Please make more goofy spinning cow videos
I played it 23 years ago 🥹
Hey, was this with Gravis Ultrasound PNP with AMD Interwave chip or was it with the classic Gravis Ultrasound with GF1 chip? I am looking for the clear differences between the 2 and for many things I think that the classic or extreme ultrasound is much better than the PNP.
The sound card was a GUS Classic with GF1 chip.
Being from USA it's interesting to see the Euro / FAC import intro for the 1st time.
damn, I played after release, then again 18 years later, but finally it seems I am done with this game, though I still listen to the songs and soundtracks from the game on RUclips. excellent game. I'm a big fan of the old models.
9 minutes of demo and 7 and a half minutes of credits lol
1999 released this demo scene, it's impressive that after 25 years the basic things of 3D still without changes.
❤Still here.
That demo required really expensive HW on the CPU, graphics card and of course audio side. Ironically, a year later the ridiculously cheap Playstation 1 came on the market, which literally decimated that PC HW.
favorite part of the song... 4:41-5:07.... happen to be The GREETINGS part! :D
Such a goofy sound setup. I know people absolutely hate it, but for some reason I find that the Ensoniq Soundscape has some charm in how it does Sound Blaster emulation.
The House Techno Demo blew my mind when I saw it in the early 90's on my 386. What an incredible time to be alive! Computers may be 1,000,000 more powerful now but the WoW factor is gone. Same is true with those who were part of the golden age of home computing in the late 70's and early 80's. The systems were new and exciting and we marveled at what they could do, something kids today will never really experience while glued to their smartphones.
@MichaelHuth Hello, can you please share this version for vogons community? there is Rendition Verite Wrapper (RReady) we will be glad to add this to it and run at any new Windows System.
Awesome intro
Reminds me of tempest 2000 on jaguar.
looking pretty impressive for MS DOS
Wieder coole Grabs! Danke :)
Hey. Greetings to you and all the best... Derek.B/CRAZY/CENSOR/ACTION
This concludes the series of videos showing graphic cards performance on X-Isle. The GF4 MX460 is at its core a Direct3D7 card only. Some more details for comparison (pixel pipelines : texture mapping units : render output units): GF 256 4:4:4, GF2 GTS 4:8:4, GF4 MX 2:4:2. Still, with half of the output stages the last GF4 MX 460 outperforms a regular GF2 easily, due to clock rates and much better memory controller.
Tresspasser :)
Environment mapping scenes are 4 times faster than on the GeForce 256. Amazing progress.
@MrMilli I checked also against a GF2 MX400 and it also does not show a noticable slowdown if environment mapping is visible. Seems to be a really different performance behavior on the GF 256.
@@MichaelHuth The feature is called Cube Environment Mapping but I can't find any info about why it's so much faster on the GF2. The pipeline must have proper/better acceleration for it or something.
Slow Chromosaurus. I wonder what causes it specifically? Do they have to compute all vertices for that one on the CPU? OpenGL supports accelerated generation of texture coordinates, but i don't know whether d3d7 has that capability. Is it an indirect blit roundtrip issue to create the environment map texture?
I think that the main reason is that the GeForce 256 has a single texture mapping unit per pixel pipeline. I will capture another run with a Geforce 2 GTS that has two texture mapping units per pixel pipeline. This should really give a difference for the environment mapped scenes.
@@MichaelHuth I'd like to suggest that it's not a multitexturing fillrate issue. Since the issue with exceptionally low framerate is disproportionate to pixel count, and occurs any time the chrome guy is in view, even at a great distance. Furthermore this effect is usualy single textured, looks like it here as well. Some more fundamental feature difference between GPU generations, perhaps.
@@SianaGearz Hmm, I think you are right.
Beautiful 👌
31 years later, and it's still incredible.
beautiful. played it back in late 90s
